Our Corporation seeks to create, in the near future, a center of excellence on the environment together with the University of Leipzig, Germany. Three other state higher education institutions will also participate in the project.

Asked about this, the State Secretary for the Environment, Paul Badenier, expressed his support for the initiative. “As Secretary, we want to support the plans of the University of Talca in terms of being able to create centers of excellence in the study of environmental policies”, said the secretary of State.

President Álvaro Rojas said that the project is promoted by our Academic Institution, which will manage it.

“The University would be leader in our country for the Southern Hemisphere, together with the University of Magallanes, the Universidad Austral and the Universidad de Chile. The secretary accepted with much generosity our request and we hope to have the support of the Department of the Environment for this center of excellence that will be implemented at the international level”, explained Rojas.

Contribution

During a recent meeting with the president, Badenier iwas briefed on the contribution the UTALCA is doing to the improvement and design of public policies on environmental matters in the Maule Region.

“We told him about some issues that the University has been developing in the field of the environment. We have a whole plan of Sustainable Campus and Clean Production Agreement. A set of activities that we have implemented in our institution, linked to train as environmentally responsible all of our students and also our alumni. We have a number of dissemination policies, a station of environmental monitoring (located at the Talca Campus since April 2013 under the seremi of the Environment’s office). And thus, a series of activities”, stated the president.

Pablo Badenier highlighted the contribution of our Institution through several initiatives, like its Third Sustainability Report, which was presented publicly at the Talca Campus last December. It is a document that includes the results of the institutional work in several areas, including the environmental aspect, as is the Clean Production Agreement, Sustainable Campus, electrical power and energy efficiency, and also carbon footprint, other emissions, waste, recycling, biodiversity, etc.

“It is always very important to maintain a relationship with the university sector, because it is a very substantive contribution that makes the University of Talca, also, to the improvement and design of public policies on environmental issues that we hope to increase. As for example, climate change, waste management, which are topics that are highly relevant and Chile requires the contribution of public universities to the design of better public policies,” explained Badenier.
