The University of Talca produced its Fourth Report on Corporate Sustainability where it shows in detail and transparently the salient aspects of its performance and impacts on the social, environmental and economic sectors, as well as the commitments and institutional goals,.
The document, with information from the five campuses, was presented at a ceremony chaired by President Alvaro Rojas, with the presence of Pro-Rector Pablo Villalobos; Academic Vice President, Gilda Carrasco, and Vice President for Undergraduates Marcela Vasquez.
The activity was held at the auditorium of the Bicentennial Space and it had as special guest Executive Director of the National Council of Cleaner Production (CPL), Juan Ladrón de Guevara, who offered a speech on "Global Change. Commitment of the Public University before the New Climate and Sustainability Challenges ".
"The most remarkable thing is that this is one of the few universities that publish sustainability reports in Chile and it does regularly since four years (…) I work in the Government, in a public office, and we do not measure the waste that we generate, our carbon footprint, the water we consume. Then, I think that the first major change occurs when one starts to measure, learns what is happening and communicates this to the citizens," said Ladrón de Guevara.
The UTALCA built its report according to the methodology of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a global standard guidelines for the development of sustainability reports, characterized by its rigor, credibility, periodicity and verifiability.
The document - prepared by the University Social Responsibility Office (RSU) - contains information on the profile of our Academic Institution, the training delivered to its students, the work of its officials, the research and innovation produced, and about the environmental commitment and the linking of the UTALCA with the community.
"It is a pleasure to present this fourth report (…) The plan is geared primarily to work with the community in all areas and also to show in the most transparent possible way the management results of each year, which is nothing else than the work of all academics, officials and students," said the president. He emphasized that the report allows comparing indicators, and seeing the institutional progress and the involvement of the Academic Institution with the citizens, and showing how the UTALCA promotes the environment.
He underlined that the institution promotes sustainability through the training of students who are social and environmentally responsible; it delivers ecological solutions from its 11 technology centers; promotes social innovation; protects biodiversity for contemplation and study of the Maulean and national communities; it implements the “UTALCA sustainable program” for a clean and healthy environment and educates the public by disseminating thematic campaigns, among other actions. "We reaffirm our responsibility with the global agenda of the United Nations, whose objectives respond to our institutional aspirations for poverty alleviation, quality education and a better relationship between the natural environment and communities," he said.
For his part, Pro-Rector Pablo Villalobos explained that the report constitutes a strategic tool for management and shows the social responsibility of our Academic Institution. "We are one of the few universities in Chile that makes this report so systematically", he stressed.
