Authorities and professionals from public and private universities from around the country gathered at the International Seminar "From Analysis to Institutional Research, a Paradigm Shift in the Strategic Management of Higher Education Institutions ", organized by the of Planning and Institutional Analysis Unit of the UTALCA, with the sponsorship of the Quality Network of the State Universities of Chile Consortium (Cuech) and the Chilean Observatory of Good Management Practices and University Management, Telescopi.
The event was inaugurated by the acting president of our Corporation, Gilda Carrasco, and had the interventions by the Research Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Lydia Snover, and professor of the Faculty of Education at the University of Maryland, Alberto Cabrera.
In addition, at the national level, the experiences of the Universities of Talca, Diego Portales, Valparaiso and Tecnica as well as the universities of the Andes (Colombia) and Austral (Argentina) were made known.
At the opening of the conference the acting President said that the paradigm shift in strategic management is a deep topic and a special focus of interest of public policy, both for Chile and at the continental level.
In this context, she recalled that the UTALCA was one of the first institutions of higher education in the country, which left the intuitive management that characterized the national university map for decades, to engage in strategic planning.
"A methodology, which in the case of a public university, requires form its community a consensus that would enable it to push through its common project. A project that has been able to progress and move forward despite the vicissitudes of Public Policy, the changing University very competitive scenarios, and unfolding in a highly deregulated system. Our corporate development, therefore, is the expression of that common project and its results are appropriated by any member of our community," she said.
Along with the high quality of presentations in the conference, the president of the Cuech and President of the University of Chile, Ennio Vivaldi, appreciated that the seminar was "extremely informative, very necessary at this time, it is a vision of how to assess universities, as they are compared in a very constructive spirit, in progress, to project a better university, to put things in perspective".
The importance of the subject analyzed was also valued by the president of the Catholic University of Maule, Diego Durán, who acknowledged that until now there are few Chilean institutions that have made progress in this area.
"Without doubt, the University of Talca has advanced in this, I also believe that the Pontificia Universidad Católica and the Universidad de Chile, too, but they are the institutions that today also have a more international projection, more important, which have had a development and a vision on this," he said.
For his part, the president of the Universidad Mayor, Rubén Covarrubias, also showed the possibility of knowing about this matter through the vision of the experts who participated in the activity.
"It is a great seminar on an emerging issue in the university sector, and it shows once more the spirit that has shown the UTALCA, which is of full cooperation, especially on issues that are being born. The theme of research and information for decision-making of the Chilean university system is very recent, and to gather speakers of this magnitude is really a contribution to the national university system," he said.
