FACULTY OF ENGINEERING GATHERED WORLD LEADERS IN POWER ELECTRONICS

RESEARCHERS AND PROFESSIONALS FROM VARIOUS COUNTRIES ANALYZED THE MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS THAT EXIST IN THE WORLD IN THE FIELD OF ELECTRONICS AND ITS POTENTIALITIES.

Technological advances such as renewable energy, systems of automation and robotization, among other areas, is present the power electronics area in respect of which the College of Engineering had an international recognition, through Spec 2017, the Conference of the Southern Cone in power electronic.

The Laboratory of Energy Conversion was in the organization of this event, in conjunction with the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Featured researchers in 29 countries and more than 180 engineers, professionals and teachers participated in Spec (for its acronym in English, Southern Power Electronics Conference), meeting for the first time in Chile, after previous editions in Brazil and New Zealand.

The dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Claudio Tenreiro, highlighted this quote represents a consolidation of power electronics as a technological area. "This conference is a national and international recognition to the work that systematically generated by the academics of the faculty in this topic. Therefore, the IEEE has entrusted us means that we are in the big leagues of the field of power electronics," he stressed.

"In Chile we are positioning themselves in technological advances such as renewable energies, automation systems, robots or other areas that are users of power electronics. In addition, large-scale mining there is another field of application of this system and now we play a fundamental role in this type of technology," he said.

Spec was carried out in four days and the venue was Puerto Varas. The program was initiated with 10 tutorials taught by experts from the UK, Germany, Chile, Denmark, the United States, Canada and Australia. In this first day attendees attended short courses on different areas such as the model predictive control of wind energy conversion systems and optimization techniques for solar power plants.

To discuss current issues and innovative approaches in the field of interest of the society of Power Electronics, were made nine lectures plenary sessions in which highlighted international personalities as Frede Blaabjerg, of the University of Aalborg (Denmark), one of the most cited researchers in engineering in the world.

In addition to the conferences, 147 articles were presented in posters to transfer research results in this annual conference of the southern hemisphere, within which the society of Power Electronics highlighted ten Phd students who received a scholarship for their outstanding contributions.

The president of the society, Alan Mantooth, highlighted the organization of this technical event and especially the place chosen for that purpose. "I am very happy with the work that has led the University of Talca, because in addition to offering interesting conferences to the scientific community, has developed dynamic activities to form social networks and connect with colleagues around the world."

For his part, professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Marco Rivera, who led the Spec 2017 organizing committee, explained that in the planning of this event is considered the goal of providing professionals who participate in the global society of power electronics the opportunity to expand their growth.

Great Exponents

"Spec with tremendous exponents who gave their knowledge and experiences in different fields but, in addition, we managed to captivate the audience with the beautiful landscapes. This type of meetings are also an instance to share with colleagues and that is why we also made other events," he said.

The president of the chapter of the Chilean section of the Society of the IEEE Power Electronics, Samir Kouro, was proud of the organization of the conference. "In these times Chile is the global epicenter because account with international experts that are discussing new developments and show us what is developing in the world in this topic. So many things are happening in the area of energy, such as the electro-mobility, a branch of power electronics which is one of the most enabling technologies," he said.
