The frequent use of social networks like Facebook, Instagram or Twiter would help to prevent suicide attempts in thousands of people who use these platforms. This was stated by the psychiatrist from the University of Montpellier (France), Phillipe Courtet, during the 5° Conference on Clinical and Health Psychology, organized by the University of Talca and held at the Casino Hotel.
"The use of social networks can be very interesting for the prevention of suicide, because it is a way to connect with others (…) being connected and integrated into social networks could have a positive protection effect", explained the European academic during the seminar titled "Suicide and adolescence."
In the academic event participated close to 300 psychologists, psychiatrists, doctors and social workers from various regions of the country, and was organized by the Department of Psychology with Support of the MINEDUC, through the University’s Performance Agreement in Humanities. Professors Iván Núñez, Rosario Spencer, Andrés Fresno and Carolina Salgado lectured at the conference, as well as professors from other universities in the country, from France and the USA.
The following day, in the same premises, the 3° International Conference on Psychic Trauma, called "Child and Adolescent Trauma: A Comprehensive Look ", was held.
One million suicides occur each year worldwide, according to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO). The same entity projected that by 2020 the figure will reach one million and a half persons, as remarked by Courtet.
The dean of the Department of Psychology of the UTALCA, Emilio Moyano - who presided over and opened both activities - said that the conference is organized each year with the purpose of transferring knowledge and "psychotecnology" to health professionals and, in addition, because they constitute an instance of institutional linkage with the community through professionals, academics and researchers.
About the problems addressed, he said that in Chile five people commit suicide each day. "That means nearly the same proportion of people who die in road accidents, which has become a serious public health problem," he said.
He emphasized that, as in the occidental countries, in our country the age of those who kill themselves has decreased. "Formerly, it was the elderly, but now they are increasingly younger, at a very early stage of adolescence, and also children, which is a matter of global concern, because it is a new phenomenon," said Moyano. He pointed out that all of this happens amidst a society that seeks the satisfaction of individual needs.
The director of the Center for Applied Psychology (CEPA), Soledad Schott, stated that the high participation of academics and specialists during the conference showed the good work carried out by the Department of Psychology in the clinical area. "We are in a country tremendously susceptible to psychological trauma," she said.
For his part, Phillipe Courtet mentioned that some factors that are researched as initiators of this behavior are sexual abuse in childhood, family history of suicide, neuroticism or emotional instability, impulsivity, low self-esteem, school failures or inadequate affiliation with peers. He also mentioned sedentary children and adolescents, heavy users of video games and the Internet.
