UNIVERSITY CREATES UNIT TO PREVENT VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT
IN ITS ROLE AS A STATE UNIVERSITY, OUR INSTITUTION AND THE MINISTRY OF WOMEN AGREED ON THE OPERATION OF A WORK TABLE AROUND THE ISSUE OF GENDER.
Decembre 2, 2016
The President of our University, Alvaro Rojas, together with the Minister of Women and Gender Equity, Claudia Pascual, signed an agreement that creates a work table between the two institutions, to collaborate in the generation of an action protocol for harassment situations to the members of the university community who have been concerned with this.
This space consists in a technical advice to the members of the table, a measure which is due to the decision of relieving the transverse action around the gender perspective at the university level.
About the intersectoral work between the institutions, the Minister of Women and Gender Equity highlighted the importance of attending all kind of spaces to put the subject of gender-based violence among the social actors. "What is important in this regard is to talk about these situations; sexual harassment is something much more common than imagined. This is not a compliment, this is trespassing the most private and intimate space, and where each person is harassed with clear gender directionality, because most of those affected are women and adolescents. These are the practices that we must eradicate away from our culture, and that is what we want to work about when this joint table is set up, together with the University." said Pascual.
The plan agreed upon between the institutions consists of dissemination, awareness-raising and training activities to the university community through the Prevention of Violence against Women Program of the SERNAMEG and the University itself.
In this regard, President Alvaro Rojas underlined the establishment of the work table between the two institutions, because the problem sometimes appears in a silent way. "Many people do not recognize gender violence, because it is applied every day, they don’t realize that they are violent with their wives, their children and their colleagues and I think that as we become aware that violence can be avoided, we will be fulfilling the role played by all state universities", reflected the president.
This three-party or inter-group experience, as defined by the minister, implies the revision of the regulations of the University, and in order to do this, a work space will be established that will define a specific protocol.
The director of the Center for Applied Psychology (ECA), Soledad Schott, announced that more than 80 per cent of women suffer some type of harassment during their lives and she added that "what is more alarming is that 71% of these cases are minors".
Schott, who said that the Center will be an advisory body to the table, also commented that "one of the most important aspects that we have realized is that harassment, as abuse, is related with psychic trauma. This means that a person who has been harassed or abused is likely to suffer a trauma".
On this issue, Secretary Pascual concluded that the space for analysis that will be created in our University will lead to achieving solutions and contributions to tackle, from the institution, all forms of gender-based violence.
