INTERNATIONAL MISSION TO PROMOTE GRADUATE PROGRAMS ABROAD
OUR UNIVERSITY CROSSED THE BORDER TO PUBLICIZE DIRECTLY IN COLOMBIA AND ECUADOR THE ADVANTAGES OF ITS OFFER OF DOCTORATES AND MASTERS.
Decembre 16, 2016
Just like Chile promotes its best products abroad, our University participated in some activities aimed at showing beyond Chilean borders its offer of doctorates and masters with the highest percentage of accredited graduate programs in the country.
This mission, pioneer at the institutional level, marks a new strategy aimed at the capture of postgraduate students, mainly from Latin American countries, as stated by Rodrigo Giacaman, Director of the Graduate School.
The activities were carried out in Colombia and Ecuador - Quito and Guayaquil - and it started with the Eighth Conference of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Internationalization of Higher Education (Lachec 2016), which included conferences and panels associated with the main topic: "Toward a Policy of Internationalization of Impact Higher Education: Global Linking, Quality, Relevance and Competitiveness."
As part of the program, the Postgraduate Fair, Postgraduate Expo 2016, was held, where the University was represented by its Graduate School.
The UTALCA formed part of the of the Chilean representation stand, composed of 23 academic institutions, under the umbrella of Learn Chile, a country brand of higher education created by ProChile, whose objective is to improve the promotion of our country as a destination for undergraduate and graduate studies.
Chile possesses attributes that make it a country of choice for that option, judging by the wide press coverage that the national representation had, as informed by the director of the Graduate School and by the professional of this unit, Lisbet Yáñez.
Among the advantages mentioned to study in Chile, it was mentioned the qualification of international agencies such as the World Bank and the OECD as the most stable and safe country in Latin America and an education that is postulated as a competitive option full of possibilities.
The instance was the occasion for our corporation to present its academic offer of postgraduate studies, one of whose advantages is the high rate of accreditation of its eight doctoral programs, 28 master’s degrees and five dental specialties. Up to October of this year this rate was 66%, the highest in the country, according to data from the National Accreditation Commission (CNA) and of the Higher Education Information System (ISES) as highlighted by Rodrigo Giacaman.
Subsequent to their participation at Lachec 2016, a delegation from our Academic Institution, led by the Graduate School and composed of seven academics, developed a technical tour in universities from Ecuador.
The group, which included academics Javier Pinedo, from the Institute for Humanistic Studies "Luis Ignacio Molina"; Alejandro del Pozo, from the Department of Agricultural Sciences; Marcela González and Jans Alzate, from Engineering; Rodrigo Moore, from Health Sciences, and María Ofelia Ronco and Luc Lapointe, from the Institute of Mathematics and Physics, conducted visits to eight universities in Quito and seven in Guayaquil.
"It is the first time that a mission of this kind is organized at the international level which together with promoting our graduate programs, it also encourages the contact of our scholars with peers from the universities visited, in their same areas, to facilitate the establishment of collaborative networks," said Rodrigo Giacaman.
"The tour was very beneficial, not only for the above reasons, but also because it enabled us to know the policy of the Ecuadorian government to increase and improve their advanced human capital in their universities, with the goal of reaching up to 70% of their academics with PhDs. That had a big influence so that we can have a good reception for all Ecuadorians to choose to come to Chile and in particular to our University", said the director of the Graduate School.
The researcher from the Institute of Mathematics, Luc Lapointe, coincided in the good results of the experience, given that it was possible to visit Mathematics departments and encourage some of its members to make applications to come to the University of Talca and, in this case, specifically to the doctorate in Mathematics.
The School of Graduates participated previously in the VI Postgraduate Meeting, organized by UNIVERSIA and Trabajando.com, held in Santiago, with the participation of 33 universities, five of them foreign.
At this event participated, as part of our University, the director of the Pediatric Dentistry specialty, Patricia Jimenez, and the director of the PhD in Plant Genetics Engineering, Simon Ruiz.
The activity gathered approximately three thousand participants, who visited the various stands. Our Academic Institution showed the offer imparted in the Talca, Curico and Santiago campuses, which have already open places for the year 2017.
