To position leadership, build theories, develop new research and train executives from education establishments are some of the purposes of the new Center for the Development of Educational Leadership, a state-funded project awarded to our academic institution through its Institute of Educational Research and Development (IISL), attached to the Department of Education Sciences.
The initiative was launched together with the Universidad Católica de Temuco, Universidad Diego Portales, Universidad Alberto Hurtado, and as a strategic partner, the University of Berkeley (USA).
The project, funded by the State Department of Education - through its General Education Division - aims to benefit the whole educational system, preschool, primary, secondary and university levels.
The dean of the Department of Education Sciences, Rossana Fiorentino, highlighted the institutional achievement. "This initiative, which was born out of the Institute of Educational Research and Development, aims to generate the leadership capabilities of the school system, with a view to improving the levels of learning of the students and also the professional development of teachers. This provides for a permanent dialog with the State Department of Education, which will give us the opportunity to participate in the generation of guidelines for public policies on school leadership of our country," said the university authority.
Through this instance courses will be imparted and there will be a methodology, contributed by the University of Berkeley, based on a workshops system during two years.
The new center project has an annual budget of nearly a billion million pesos (US$ 1,5 million, approx) and will be extended initially until 2019.
The director of the IISL, Sebastian Donoso , pointed out that one of the variables that have been identified as key on the educational results is the existence of good leaders. "We have not had massive leadership training processes at the country level. This is the first time that there will be a large country policy. It is going to improve middle managers of schools and at the county level. And also to those who will train these leaders directly ", said the academic.
Among the activities committed by our University there are research, extension and training projects. "We initiated our activities in January and the hard work started in March. As the Universidad de Talca, we are responsible for a management skills transfer line and a number of other projects for several years," said Donoso.
He said that, at the national level, the director of the Center is the former assistant secretary of education and former Secretary of Culture, José Weinstein. The central offices of this entity are located at the Universidad Diego Portales and will also operate from the member universities of the project.
For her part, Dean Rossana Fiorentino said that to contribute to the education in our country is a priority transversal axis and that supports the Universidad de Talca. "To be able to contribute, together with the Universidad Diego Portales, through the creation of a center for school leadership, will give us the opportunity to collaborate with the State in a national context through the development of research and innovation, within a theoretical and empirical framework," said the academic.
In the field of educational leadership, our University has held a School of Leadership for directors, teachers, counselors and Inspectors General of establishments in primary and secondary education in the Maule Region for seven consecutive years.
The instance has included workshops where the school management teams are trained in pedagogical, supervision and monitoring of work in the classroom aspects. In addition, each year, experts give talks and there is a presentation of the degree thesis works of graduate students of the IISL Master’s programs.
"For us, this center is very important, it is a recognition of what we have been doing with our Master’s degree programs, with the generation of research and articles during the 25 years of the existence of the IISL," said Sebastian Donoso.
