Former President of Uruguay, José "Pepe" Mujica, will be the fourth Honorary Doctor from the Universidad de Talca, a distinction that he agreed to receive and confirmed he will come in October, the month of celebration of the 35th anniversary of our Academic Institution, despite his busy agenda.

It was President Alvaro Rojas himself who personally announced the decision of the Board of Directors of the UTALCA to José Mujica about granting him its highest academic distinction, instituted to recognize the great contribution made by a person to social progress or to creation. "He's very pleasantly surprised and grateful, because he thinks as important that state universities have a leading role in higher education in countries like Chile," said the president.

On the figure of Pepe Mujica, he stressed that he is very relevant in the development of good politics in Latin America. He added that the former President is one of those persons who hold positions with much austerity, "who are free from what the press denounces today, people who show the way and inspire young people to seek positive role models in politics, which are necessary for all countries".

Rojas underlined that "Pepe Mujica is the most known and recognized figure from Latin America and the Western and European world, because he symbolizes "the proximity to the real problems of society, like poverty, abandonment, inequality".

In that context he recalled that the former Uruguayan President made a series of efforts to decrease social gaps in his country and was able to cross the borders and become known to the world. "His testimony has left a deep mark, especially among the young people, and we have to admit it," he said.

Political Science

The Honorary degree is given, in this occasion, in the area of Political Science, which is the sector where Mujica has done his actions and where his is prominent, since his times as a guerilla fighter, his work as a Congressman and Senator, his functions as Secretary of Livestock, Agriculture and Fishing - in the period during which Alvaro Rojas was Chile’s Secretary of Agriculture - and his performance as President of the Republic, a position for which he was elected in 2009, under the Frente Amplio party.

In the exercise of those functions, including the Presidency, he was identified by his special ways of being and living, and "for always saying what he thought and not what should be said say according to image coaches", said the president. He added that, in that way, he succeeded in attracting sectors that were away from politics before, intellectuals and people who are in different positions.

José Alberto Mujica Cordano, 40th President of Uruguay, is remembered for his austere life and his opinions against consumerism, his defense of the environment, and human relations.

Alvaro Rojas explained that the presence of Mujica is very sought-after in different countries. He has just returned from Japan, he will travel to Germany, then he goes to England, but he assured that he will reserve a place on his agenda to come to the Universidad de Talca in order to be inducted as Honorary Doctor, a distinction given only on three previous occasions.

Honorary Doctorate

The first personality to receive it, in 2008, was Chilean lawyer Alfredo Etcheverry, criminal lawyer and academic, who was rewarded for his contribution to the defense of human rights in the Augusto Pinochet regime. The following year, the distinction was awarded to M.S. Swaminathan, Indian scientist, who is recognized worldwide for his contribution to the development of biotechnology and agriculture in order to fight poverty in the world. The third Honorary Doctor from the Universidad de Talca was awarded in 2015 to the economist Ricardo Ffrench-Davis, for his contribution to the development of Economic Sciences from a social perspective and his contribution to economic thoughts that are an alternative to the neoliberal model currently in force in Chile and Latin America.
