TEACHING & SERVICES CLINICS DELIVERED MORE THAN 46 THOUSAND ATTENTIONS A YEAR
STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS PROVIDE QUALITY CARE, WITH THE SAME CRITERIA OF EXCELLENCE THAT DISTINGUISHES OUR ACADEMIC INSTITUTION IN THE COUNTRY.

First-level care accessible to all, that is what the community finds in the six clinics that the University makes available to it, which annually provide 46 thousand 771 attentions in the areas of Audiology, Kinesiology, Dentistry, Law - in the regional capital and in Santiago- as well as Psychology. In all of them quality, both in human resources and technological equipment, has become the hallmark.
"I need a dental prosthesis and my granddaughter brought me here. I am in treatment since April and I have responded very well, I wasn’t even afraid. Young people are very kind and caring and I am grateful to the University, which is from Talca, because without this clinic I couldn’t laugh again as I like. They are very good," told Rosa Caro, a patient at the Dental Clinic.
The Talca county health director, Gonzalo Cancino, also appreciated the work of the unit.
"They have made a great contribution to the dental health of the community. The truth is that we have always received good attention and good coordination. This has improved the health of the people," he said.
Precisely, out of the total care provided by the Clinics, the Dental Clinic is the one that offered the greatest number of attentions, with a figure exceeding 37 thousand per year. It is a service that, as explained by the director of that unit, Eliana Leiva, stands out as comprehensive.
"Patients not only receive the attention they require to solve a particular situation, but also we try to involve them and raise awareness about the importance of prevention in oral health," he said.
In that sense, the academic stressed that, following the same logic, they work with children and older adults – who, if necessary, get care at home- who, due to lack of resources or capacity of the system, have limited access to dental care.
"We are not going to solve the problems of oral health in the Region, but we are indeed an important support, in particular for People who, even if they are still beneficiaries of the public system, for reasons of coverage, cannot get care and do not have the resources to access private consultations," he said.
Impact on Health
The effects the Clinics have had on the lives of Mauleans is evidenced in the testimonies of patients who, for the most part, are cared for free or at costs far below market prices.
A positive experience about which Gladys Alcaino, a patient at the Kinesiology Clinic, spoke. "I have Parkinson's disease and I have been coming for the past two years. When I first arrived I walked dragging my legs and now I almost walk normally," she said.
"Here, attention is very good, in addition to the affection of the students and the concern of the persons in charge, but what calls my attention is the advances they have here. I congratulate the University for this service for those of us who cannot go to the paid clinics ", she added.
It is precisely the attributes of professionalism, dedication, respect and affection with which students and professionals assume each of the interventions that were rescued by Loreto Rubio Covarrubias, a user of the Phonoaudiology Clinic. "The sessions stimulate me importantly in my rehabilitation. In addition, I have been able to appreciate the progress of other patients who, like me, have received therapeutic support," she said.
For President Alvaro Rojas the work carried out through these units represents the "two cents" with which the institution contributes to deliver solutions on matters that impact on Mauleans.
"We are not a public health service, but, as the same time as we train our students and graduates, we help alleviate small big problems that affect the quality of life of the people. On the other hand, there are many families who, in the face of such complex legal issues to follow and understand, have our students welcoming them, guiding them and proposing solutions that are relevant to their life and tranquility," he said.
He added that the diversity of areas that the clinics encompass is the best evidence of the strong links established by the University with the Region.
"I appreciate tremendously the link generated between the university, their young future professionals and the community. It is part of the great role played by public universities deployed throughout the territory," he said.
