NEW METHOD TO SAVE STRAWBERRIES FROM LETHAL FUNGUS

"Resilience In Plants: Global Challenges" was the name of the seminar organized by the Institute of Biological Sciences and the PhD program in Sciences, with mention in Plant Genetic Engineering, that was attended by important specialists from Spain, Argentina, Mexico and Chile.
Simon Ruiz, organizer of the seminar and the director of the mentioned PhD program, talked about the objective of the activity that "sought to interact with the most important scientists on how plants are able to tolerate the different climatic conditions and, taking advantage of these features, ensure the food supply of the future."
In this context, Professor Carlos Figueroa, from the Institute of Biological Sciences, spoke on the subject of "Current Challenges for the Genetic Improvement and Sustainable Production in Native Chilean Strawberry". In his presentation he explained the development of a line of research to help the white strawberry, which is cultivated in the Purén and Contulmo sectors, to protect it against the attack of pathogens such as Botrytis, a fungus that causes severe losses in production.
"What we do is to use compounds of natural origin from other plants, called phytohormones, which are applied in a concentrated way as methyl jasmonate, which is a molecule that activates a defense mechanism. It is currently in the study phase and can also be used in other fruits. These compounds also have other beneficial effects, such as the increase in the antioxidant capacity, major compounds of healthy elements for human consumption, and it helps the synthesis of lipids of the skin of the fruit for a greater resistance to this," added Figueroa.
