UTALCA RECEIVED AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN ITS EDUCATIONAL MODEL
THE INTER-AMERICAN UNIVERSITY ORGANIZATION (OUI) HONORED OUR ACADEMIC INSTITUTION FOR THE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY DIMENSION INCLUDED IN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS.
August 12, 2016
Our Academic Institution was the only university in Chile - among 10 others in America – to be distinguished by the Inter-American University Organization (OUI) as an institution with successful practices in educational innovations and management.
The recognition in the "Honorable Mention" category was awarded at the Inter-American Award for Educational Innovation in Higher Education (OUI) 2016.
The Corporation was chosen among 33 institutions -belonging to 14 countries- which presented their initiatives during the "Senior Management of the OUI on Innovative Educational Models (MEIN)" seminar, carried out in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
In this international body, the Prorector of the UTALCA, Pablo Villalobos, spoke about the Undergraduate Social Responsibility (RSP) module, in which students of various programs - with support from academics--put into practice, each year, solidarity projects to improve the quality of life of different communities in the Maule Region.
"The distinction constitutes a recognition of the work done by the University of Talca in terms of the quality of the basic Training Program and its Undergraduate Social Responsibility module. It highlights the educational innovation and the institutional effort in preparing high excellence professionals who provide a social and responsibility context in their daily work," explained the Prorector.
The first place awards of the event went to the Université de Montréal, Canada; the Catholic University of Rio Grande del Sur, Brazil and the Autonomous University of Puebla, Mexico, which won the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In its educational model - included in its Basic Training Program (PFF) - the UTALCA imparts transverse knowledge in three areas: communication, interpersonal skills and CSR.
The Vice President for Undergraduates, Marcela Vásquez, extended the recognition granted by OUI to the "academics and professionals who have been behind this initiative since its inception in 2006, and to all the students, who work to the best of their abilities".
"Achieving this Honorable Mention fills us with satisfaction, since the University decided, in 2006, to include activities aimed to develop the generic profile in the formative process of all students, incorporating training on citizenship and social responsibility, among other topics." Since then, a serious work has been developed from the Fundamental Training program, under the Vice President for Undergraduates, and with the collaboration of all undergraduate Schools; a work that is today recognized by this distinction," said Vasquez.
Likewise, the director of the PFF, Andrés Vega, said that this international achievement shows that the outreach model of our Academic Institution is valued as "a desirable practice to be transferred not only to other Chilean universities, but also to America".
OUI - based in Canada - is composed of more than 300 institutions in 26 countries, with more than five million students, 500 000 professors and 600 000 officials.
