CEDIA LED CELEBRATION OF CHILDREN’S DAY
THE DAY WAS BORN AS A PROPOSAL FROM THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS STUDIES CENTER (CEDIA) OF THE UNIVERSIDAD DE TALCA.
August 11, 2016
More than 250 schoolchildren from the Region participated in the First Marathon of Tales, organized by the Regional Commission for the Eradication of Children Work in the Maule Region to commemorate Children’s Day.
The day was born as a proposal from the Rights of Children and Adolescents Studies Center (Cedia) of the Universidad de Talca, aimed at reclaiming the original sense of this date, today transformed into a commercial landmark.
"What we seek with this activity is to rescue the true meaning of this day: that children and adolescents have a series of rights", said the Deputy Director of the Cedia and coordinator of the event, Isaac Ravetllat.
To achieve that goal, the tales and other activities that were carried out during the event - like a puppet show performed by Carabineros de Chile police officers, a round of storytellers and Chilean legends that were read by authorities and dramatized by students from the Department of Law and Social Sciences of the UTALCA-, addressed issues such as the right to non-discrimination and to live in a non-violent environment, among others.
Ravetllat pointed out that raising these issues in a fun way not only allows to pave the way for the work then carried out with children and their families, but will also build a bridge between academia and the public.
"We realized that the impact that we can have if we just stayed in academia is very low. Then, through a more entertaining manner, we seek to transform our technical-legal language to engage with the people", he said.
"As a public University, we have a duty towards the community that surrounds us, and what we want is to get out of the campus to understand each others and to interact with children, their families, to show them that there are people working on this and to open their mind to a different way of dealing with their children," he added.
The regional director of the National Minors Service, Ana Retamal, stressed that such activities serve to "show to the citizens that we must empower ourselves on this issue", a field where the UTALCA "plays a transcendental role", she said.
"We have carried out a very coordinated and connected management, which for us means a powerful work source ", she said.
For his part, the Governor of Talca, Oscar Vega, stressed that this type of activities helps, for example, to generate awareness on the need to eradicate children work. "To raise awareness in children, teachers, parents and guardians, with regard to the issue of child labor as a scourge of modern society", he said.
Ravetllat said that for the second semester, Cedia is organizing a series of activities related to the rights of the child.
"Continuing in a more playful way, on August 20 and 27 will do a flashmob at the Portal Centro mall and at the CREA fair, while, from the academic perspective, we are working in Organizing two seminars and a program to train school mediators, among other activities that we will carry out, both in Chile and abroad", he told.
