THE EVENT WAS A DAY OF REFLECTION FOR SPECIALISTS AROUND THE GOOD AND BAD ASPECTS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOPIC IN OUR COUNTRY.

August 26, 2016

The president of our Corporation, Alvaro Rojas, said that the University is now much more diverse, which poses new challenges to the system, in terms of retention and graduations. He also talked about the demands of the country in technical training.

Alvaro Rojas made these comments at the launching of the book "Formative Function in Higher Education", which took place in Linares, organized by the Aequalis Higher Education Forum. The publication addresses various aspects of the progress of quality in training professionals, and explores, as well, the value and importance of technical training.

The meeting was held at the Municipal Theater of that city, and, in addition to the authority of the University Corporation, it counted with presentations by the Executive Secretary of the Aequalis Forum, Gonzalo Puentes; the co-author of the book, Alejandra Villarzú and the director of the “San Agustín” Technical Training Center (CFT), Linares headquarters, Sebastián Tapia.

The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with everything related to educational quality and the value of diversity, analyzed through four chapters, and the second part explores the identity and value of technical-professional training, a topic presented in six sections.

During his speech, President Rojas, delved into and gave his vision on the two matters addressed in the book. "The authors make an interesting review regarding the fact that today there is a group of students, who traditionally could not get into higher education, for income reasons, who are entering into higher education. That makes the University much more diverse and poses new challenges to the system in terms of retention and graduations", stressed the authority.

From the organizers’ part, the Executive Secretary of Aequalis highlighted the objectives of the book as a way of perfecting the system of higher education as a whole. "This event, that we intend to carry out in many Regions, aims at strengthening the formative role of the institutions in the creation of professionals, in a general way. Another of the issues that we are trying to show is that the diversity of institutions in terms of quality education is good for the country and for the demands on the system. What the discriminating factor to choose should be is the quality, independently of whether it is a public, private or regional institution ".

Another big chapter of the book launched by the Aequalis Forum on Higher Education is the importance and the role of technical-professional training. In this regard, the president of the Universidad de Talca emphasized the role played by our Academic Institution in the matter. "Half of the enrollment, i.e. about 600 thousand students, follow classes in private CFTs, mainly,  and the big demand points to that line, so that the requirements of quality, of accreditation, should be higher, because the students are in a system that lasts two or three years and then they quickly enter the labor market", he explained.

He added that, as a complement, the State CFT, which will open in Linares, and the Universidad de Talca will develop a number of activities that will give good response to the demands of the southern Maule Region in terms of training at the higher level.

Likewise, he assessed that there is "a concern about having an academic discussion regarding the two great topics of the book, which are the two big challenges facing higher education in our country", he added.

In this context, Gonzalo Puentes pointed at the relevance this subject has showed, which implies designing new policies to promote this type of training.
