ENGINEERING CREATED DEVICE THAT REDUCES EMISSIONS BY 90%
THE EQUIPMENT IS CALLED "KIPUS ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR" AND IS INSTALLED IN BIOMASS COMBUSTORS. IT IS AIMED MAINLY AT THE BREAD INDUSTRY, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE USED IN HOMES.

Up to 90% of particulate matter from wood furnaces or other types of biomass can bring down a new device created by the Kipus Engineering System of the Universidad de Talca, which was presented to more than 30 bakery businessmen at the Curicó Campus.
"Kipus Electrostatic Precipitator" is the name of the device, whose performance and effectiveness was shown to the bakers.
"They managed to do something very beneficial for the bakeries and for the house fireplaces. People who install this implement may use wood with very little emissions, which is beneficial to the community", said the President of the Association of Industrial Bakers (Indupan) of Curicó, Pedro Morales.
The leader said they expect to install very soon the device in their bakeries, since it will also mean to get a distinctive seal, awarded by the Council of Clean Production.
In this sense, the regional coordinator of this organism, Osvaldo Alcázar, said that such innovations go along the sustainability line that they are requiring from the industry. "We are fortunate to have this technology in the region, being ahead of many others that already have decontamination plans. We have been working with the industrial bakers for two years looking how can they decrease their pollution levels and now we will support them so that they can have this technology," he said.
During the explanation of the operation of the equipment, Carlos Torres, Director of the Kipus Engineering Systems Center, stated that through Corfo and Sercotec there are specific mechanisms so that companies can co-fund the installation of this system and indicated that interested businessmen will get the support of the Center to apply fot the funds.
The academic was very satisfied with the provision and interest shown by the bakers. "We are developing products which go in direct benefit of companies in the zone and for this reason I am very pleased with the good reception of the device. We hope in the future that this equipment is not only installed in various industries that use biomass, but can also be installed in homes," he said.
Kipus Electrofiltro works through a small scale electrostatic precipitator (PES). The system uses a 30 kV voltage that allows keeping a potential difference between the electrode and the wall of the pipe; it ionizes the particles attracting them to the wall of the pipe, preventing their release to the environment.
The proposed design does not require excessive space for its installation and is directly attached to the smoke duct. "Installation in bakeries and SMEs of the saturated urban areas will allow them to maintain their competitiveness linked to the low cost of firewood with which they operate and improve its sustainability and the quality of air in their close environment. A gross estimate suggests that with 100 precipitators installed in industries, up to 2.3% of the total particles emissions to the air in the region could diminish", said Professor Carlos Torres.
