NEW TOOL TO ASSESS ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN BUILDINGS AND CITIES

THE KIPUS CENTER FOR ENGINEERING SYSTEMS WAS AWARDED CORFO FUNDS TO IMPLEMENT A UNIQUE ANALYSIS TOOL IN THE COUNTRY FOR ENERGY ASSESSMENT.

September 12, 2017

"A Platform to Characterize Energy Consumption and to Estimate Savings in Corporate and Public Buildings" is the name of the project to be implemented by the Kipus Center for Engineering Systems, with the support of Corfo. The initiative will provide appropriate information to help authorities make decisions that contribute to 20% decrease in energy consumption in the country, one of the commitments promoted in a plan going up to 2025.

"The tool we will implement will help to understand the consumption in large buildings, since it is not yet clear what part comes from lighting, climate control and other systems. And above all, it will evaluate scenarios for improving energy efficiency at the individual level in buildings and cities", explained the director of the Center, Carlos Torres.

To do this, the CityBES software, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will be used. It is easy to use for the users and building owners, who will be able to estimate how much they could reduce their energy consumption. The tool is used in several cities in the United States, but to implement it in Chile requires adjustments with regard to the characterization of the types of existing buildings.

The data will be incorporated into the system, and then assess the surface, height, archetype, the consumption generated and use in 300 buildings in Talca, Concepción and Santiago.

That information would make it possible to analyze the profitability of 80 reconditioning alternatives defined in the platform.
