NEW FONDECYT INITIATION IN RESEARCH PROJECTS REINFORCE INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
THE INITIATIVES BY YOUNG RESEARCHERS COME FROM DIFFERENT AREAS AND WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE OF COMPLEXITY THAT THE CORPORATION HAS CHOSEN.
September 30, 2016
Nine young researchers from different academic units who recently finished their PhD studies were awarded projects that had been presented to the Fondecyt's initiation in research 2016 contest, a fact that contributes to the strengthening of the research area in our University.
The selected projects are those by Marco Cabrera, from the Department of Agricultural Sciences; Sergio Wahinger, from Health Sciences; Dario Parra and Marcela Acuña, from Legal and Social Sciences; Alejandro Cataldo and Juan Andrés Riquelme, from Economics and Business; Gonzalo Pincheira and Jorge Hinojosa, from the Department of Engineering, and David Plaza, from the Mathematics and Physics Institute.
"We are very pleased for obtaining these nine Fondecyt's initiation in research projects, since this Conicyt source of financing supports the development of scientific or technological research exclusively for researchers who have recently completed their doctoral program", said Academic Vice President Gilda Carrasco.
At the same time, she stressed that these projects "strengthen the development in different areas of knowledge in which our University leads ".
In the same sense, the Director of Research at our Academic Institution, Iván Palomo, stressed that this area is a key pillar in its development towards complexity, and therefore, he emphasized that the awarding of the projects by young researchers "is very good news".
Concerning previous contests, Professor Palomo noted that awarding was higher this year, because in 2015, seven projects were awarded.
"The resources that researchers will receive will allow them to get equipment, reagents and others expendables for experimentation, travel to present their results in international conferences, invite foreigners researchers and publish in international journals, among others aspects", he said.
"All this promotes the generation of international collaboration networks, which are also fundamental for the PhD programs. More and better research is virtuously associated to more and better postgraduate programs", he commented.
The statistics about Fondecyt's initiation in research in our University indicate that from 2011 to the present year, the awards of projects has risen to 52, benefiting mainly the Department of Engineering, with a total of 16 approved initiatives.
One of them academics favored was Alejandro Cataldo, with his project called ' Routinization ' of the IT, effects of the interaction of the users with the technology and the social group. "I research in information systems, that is a relatively new scientific field in Chile", he said, adding that the award of a Fondecyt “is for me an acknowledgment of belonging to the University and I hope it is a sign that my area of research is beginning to open up spaces in the national scientific community".
For Marcela Acuña, this Fondecyt support means "a great stimulus to continue working and researching, and I feel committed in a serious, rigorous and deep search for legal solutions to basic human problems that appear in family relationships".
For his part, Dario Parra said that his project aims to establish objectives parameters and a conduct model that give “certainty "about when a medical action can qualify as negligent in a civil liability trial ".
The approved projects in the recent contest should start next November.
