We have a strong commitment to biological research, focusing on plants and their environment.

Institute of Biological Sciences

The work carried out by the ICB transcends undergraduate education, extending to various programs within the University of Talca in the field of biological sciences. Much of the research conducted by this institute focuses on plants of agricultural and forestry importance.

At the undergraduate level, we offer a degree in Biochemistry, providing a solid scientific foundation and a broad understanding of the structures, functions, transformations, and interactions of living matter. This program is based on a disciplinary approach focused on research and innovation.

In addition to its commitment to research and teaching in this field, the Institute of Biological Sciences strives to develop scientific capabilities through the development of high-quality graduate programs.

+ To date, 60 doctors have graduated from the Doctorate of Science with a mention in Plant Biology and Biotechnology.

“Welcome to the ICB, an academic unit dedicated to scientific research, oriented toward the generation of knowledge and its application in the field of plant biology. It promotes undergraduate and graduate research. Furthermore, its faculty contribute basic courses in the Biological Sciences to the training of professionals in various programs at the University.”

Emerging under the wing of the ICB, lA biochemist from the University of Talca, he is an innovative professional with a solid scientific background and mastery of his discipline. He is highly qualified to join multidisciplinary research groups at universities, centers, or companies and contribute to the country's scientific development.

Likewise, he is able to understand, analyze and explain normal vital processes and their alterations at the molecular level using the scientific method.

The innovative and flexible curriculum, which incorporates research project management and human resources skills, along with a focus on productive activities in the forestry and agri-food sector, favors the development of Research-Development-Innovation (R&D&I) activities.

Since 2001, the Doctorate in Sciences with a focus on Plant Biology and Biotechnology has trained advanced and highly qualified human capital to conduct research, development, and innovation in the field of plant biology and biotechnology.

The Master's program in Applied Ecology aims to train students through a learning process regarding the structure and function of agricultural and forestry systems. Launched in 2014, it currently has six years of accreditation.

Created in 2023, the Master's in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is the newest postgraduate program in this research unit. Through its curriculum, it seeks to provide advanced training in the areas of protein biotechnology, genomics, metabolic engineering, genetics, genetic engineering, and biology.
