ENERGY AND AUTOMATION TAKE OVER THE CURICO CAMPUS

RESEARCH RELATED TO AUTOMATION IN DIFFERENT AREAS WERE SHOWN IN TWO ACADEMIC MEETINGS HELD IN CURICÓ.

November 11, 2016

More than 200 specialists from 24 countries presented papers at the International Conference on IEEE Automatics and the XXII Chilean Congress of the Association of Automated Control (ACCA) that took place at the Curico Campus. Simultaneously, the Energy Fair was held.

The academic instances made it possible to access more than 130 studies related to automation in various areas, such as agro-industry, energy and mining. In addition, foreign specialists were able to know some research conducted by academics from the Department of Engineering in these areas.

The Vice President for Innovation and Technological Transfer, Gonzalo Herrera, stressed that "our University has achieved a sustained growth in the field of research and development, which is reflected in the high number of seminars and international conferences that we are carrying out each year."

The topics of the Congress had a strong relationship with the matters addressed by the academics in the Department of Engineering whose dean, Claudio Tenreiro, explained the major challenges in this area for the Academia. "To achieve a new energy matrix, a source of distributed generation that meets the needs and expectations of individuals and enterprises and that is aligned with the technologies that can be provided, in addition to the possibility of breaking down many myths in the energy field, are some of the challenges that meetings of this kind must have," he said.

From the organizing committee, Mario Fernández emphasized the fact of having included as exhibitors business professionals from various sectors, which meant to understand the requirements of the productive sector in the field of automation. "The level of the presentations has been very good and during the plenary session we were able to know the country’s issues and how to address the problems in companies in the areas of energy," he said.

The president of the Chilean Association of Automatic Control, Carolina Lagos, considered that it was essential that meetings of this kind are carried out in regions as a way of enhancing research in various points of the country. "In this sense, the University of Talca took up this challenge that has proved to be a success, we know that here there is quite a bit of research done in fields related to Automation", she said.

Also, the president of the IEEE’s Southern Cone Council - one of the major international associations related to the area of research in engineering- Gaston Lefranc, highlighted the large number of researchers involved and the level of their work, as well as the infrastructure of the University at the Curicó Campus.

On the other hand, the Energy Fair is carried out in the framework of the implementation of the Engineering of New Alternative Technologies projects for the utilization of wind energy in the region and Installing a pilot waste use plant for the generation of energy and firewood drying, both initiatives have the support of the Regional Government of  the Maule Region through the Innovation Fund for Competitiveness (FIC-R).
