Laying the groundwork for the establishment of a protocol allowing to inform consumers about the functional characteristics of food and, at the same time, improving business opportunities for producers is the aim of the work our Corporation is carrying out, which was awarded one of the four strategic lines established by the Chilean Agency for Food Safety and Food Quality (Achipia) and (Corfo) to position our country as a leader in the production of healthy food at the global level.
Within the framework of this project, whose implementation is in charge of the Center for Food Safety of our Corporation, Achipia together with UTALCA organized the international seminar entitled "Mechanisms for the Regulation and Management of Functional Food Standards, for the Declaration of Healthy Properties."
At the opening of the conference, Pro Rector Pablo Villalobos emphasized that the work of our Academic Institution will standardize and optimize the processes used by the Government’s Health Department (MINSAL) to recognize and validate the association between food/nutrient and health conditions, as well as the communication of the healthy properties that are attributed to them."
"The result of this work, which we hope will be ready by the end of the year, should become an instance of support for the Department in the design of a procedure for the incorporation of new health messages," he said.
The head of the Nutrition and Food Unit of the Healthy Public Policies Division of the Health Department, Lorena Rodriguez, added that "this type of studies allow us to have a model by which we can incorporate, based on Science, new healthy messages, which is the concept that puts into practice functional foods, and how we communicate this to the population. That UTALCA is behind this, gives us the certainty that we are putting science on the table, and not only marketing."
